ONE FOR BLOOD AND BLOOD FOR ALL!
 MDHS Blood Drive Yields Pints!

This report was filed from the field at the Mt. Diablo High School Blood Drive, April 6th by Editor In Chief, Jeff KasperÉ

The gym was aflutter with activities as what seemed like hundreds of young people crowded the snack table to get their strength up before giving blood.  There were cheerleaders to the left of me, jocks to the right of me.  A plethora of colors abounded in front of me as the punk rock contingent arrived.  Trailing slightly behind them was the Goth crowd, looking like they were ready for a funeral, or maybe the poster children for the anemic.

What do all these kids have in common?  They were all there to give blood.  Some were ŇveteransÓ, having donated three or more times.  Others were fearful of the possible pain they were about to endure!  What was missing form this scene?  Not much, except that I am the only Rotarian here.  Out of all those who raised their hands at the meeting, apparently I am the only one who remembered. (Albeit organizer John Newman did call me to let me know that he had to attend a meeting in Fremont.)  However, the students did keep me company with some lively conversation during my 3hrs there!

ALŐS 30 YEARS ON THE TABLE

Somewhere along the line, we overlooked the fact that Al Browning has been a regular blood donor for over 30 years.  He started out with Irwin Memorial Blood

Bank in San Francisco, then transferred to the Red Cross in Pleasant Hill where he became an aphaeresis (platelets) donor.  He has literally donated gallons of blood, and now donates platelets at least once a month.

Al sez:  "For the majority of people who are perfectly able to donate their life saving blood and platelets, please do so -- at least once a year.  More often, if you can.  There is no place else to get this badly needed, life saving fluid.  Less than 5% of those who can donate ever do so.  If we could raise this percentage even a small amount, there would be no -- that's NO -- shortage.  EVER!!

Please give this matter your serious attention.

3rd BLOOD DRIVE AT MDHS

GREAT SUCCESS!

Past Prez John Newman organized another blood drive at MDHS.  That makes three for this year alone!  That means, along with the kids that actually gave their blood, we helped save 200+ lives!

OPERATION ŇSAMÓ A SUCCESS!

Thanks to everyone who contributed to Operation SAM – the cards, DVDŐs and everything else are greatly appreciated and will make some service men and womenŐs holidays special, even if they canŐt be home with their families.

2,000 INDIVIDUALS IN CONCORD HAVE A BETTER HOLIDAY THANKS TO CONCORD-DIABLO ROTARY!

November 2005 alone, our actions have affected the lives of over 500 families.  (180 blood drive, 250 gift cards, 60 Cambridge, 40 Teen Challenge) Using the current US Census statistics, that means close to 2,000 or more individuals.  Thank goodness we were spending our time helping, and not begging for people to serve. Any questions about the power of one Rotary club?

TEEN CHALLENGE GIVING TREE GIFTS A HUGE SUCCESS!

Our club took on the Teen Challenge Giving Tree, giving gifts for those in need.  Two representatives from the organization visited the club on December 7th to personally thank all the members who made the programŐs residents dreams a reality.

WAKAYAMA-WEST RC REUNION

Renews Old Friendships!

Jeff & Beri Kasper were reunited with 17 members of the Wakayama-West Rotary Club during the week of January 8th -15th  2006.

The reunion was the brainchild of Mituteru Nishitani and Jeff Kasper. The cooked up the idea at the Rotary Convention in Osaka in 2004.

In the past quarter-century that the sister club relations has existed, over 40 students have made their way across the ocean for a two to three week stay in a different country.  Undoubtedly, these studentŐs lives have been enriched forever.

The Four-Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

   1.     Is it the TRUTH?

   2.     Is it FAIR to all concerned?

   3.     Will it build GOODWILL and

           BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

   4.    Will it be BENEFICIAL to all

           concerned?"

IN MEMORY

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ned StilinovichŐs mother Anne, who passed away on April 4th.  Funeral services were held on 4/10/06.

We are also saddened to announce the passing of charter member and past-president (1981-82) Frank Milliken on April 5th.  No services are planned.

Frank was awarded two patents for his inventions and ran a number of successful business ventures in the area.  He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Janet, and four children.
