MAUREEN NAMED CONCORDŐS BEST!

Librarian a favorite among residents!

Actually, the Concord Library, not librarian Maureen Kilmurray, was named in a city-wide poll as the best place to sit and read the newspaper or a good book!

The Transcript article noted, ŇUnlike libraries that are dark, musty or clod, the Concord library is cheerful and light, thanks to a recent face lift and large windows offering lots of natural light.Ó

While we knew that she is a really fun person, we are pleased to hear that others acknowledge this too!  We were also very pleased to hear that ConcordŐs residents can, and are still interested in reading!

Rotarians are strongly encouraged to stop by the Concord Library, 2900 Salvio St., and see what the buzz is all about! Congratulations Maureen on your popularity!

WAKAYAMA / CONCORD-DIABLO REUNION

Beri & Jeff Kasper report that they have safely returned from their reunion with members of our sister club, Wakayama-West, in HawaiŐi.

A total 17 members from the Wakayama-West club were able to join the trip. Everyone got together for dinner.  Nishitani also presented us with a roster of the members who came on the trip and all the young people who had participated in our exchange program. For the next two days it was a lot of golf (Beri played with them at Kaanapali) and Kapalua, food, fun, and fellowship.

Special thanks to DG Brian D. Thiessen, who supplied pins to gift our visitors.  In a surprising turn of events, Beri & Jeff ended up being the speakers when they made-up at the Lahina Sunrise Club!

BLOOD DRIVE SLATED AT MDHS

JANUARY 19th

                           Volunteers Needed!

As you may recall, the blood drive at Mt. Diablo High School on November 17th was very successful. Over 80 Seniors signed up to donate life.  Of those, approximately 60 were eligible.  That means we helped save 180 lives! Not bad work for just a few short hours!

Now itŐs time for a command performance!  John Newman is coordinating volunteers to staff another drive at the school on January 19th. We need a total of at least six people to accept a two-hour shift.  Thanks to Beri Kasper, who already stepped up to the plate!  Contact John with your time preference.

OPERATION ŇSAMÓ A SUCCESS!

Thanks to everyone who contributed to Operation SAM – the cards, DVDŐs and everything else are greatly appreciated and will make some service men and womenŐs holidays special, even if they canŐt be home with their families.

2,000 INDIVIDUALS IN CONCORD HAVE A BETTER HOLIDAY THANKS TO CONCORD-DIABLO ROTARY!

November 2005 alone, our actions have affected the lives of over 500 families.  (180 blood drive, 250 gift cards, 60 Cambridge, 40 Teen Challenge) Using the current US Census statistics, that means close to 2,000 or more individuals.  Thank goodness we were spending our time helping, and not begging for people to serve.

Any questions about the power of one Rotary club?

TEEN CHALLENGE GIVING TREE GIFTS A HUGE SUCCESS!

Our club cleaned up the tree, taking all the ornaments from the Teen Challenge Giving Tree, and exchanging them for real gifts for those in need in the program.  Two representatives from the organization visited the club on December 7th to personally thank all the members who made the programŐs residents dreams a reality.  Congratulations on a job well done! .

BOOK REVIEW

Students were assigned to read 2 books, "Titanic" & "My Life" by Bill Clinton.

One smart ass student turned in the following book report, with the proposition that they were nearly identical stories!  His cool professor gave him an A+ for this report:

Titanic: $29.99

Clinton: $29.99

Titanic: Over 3 hours to read

Clinton: Over 3 hours to read

Titanic: The story of Jack and Rose, their forbidden love, and subsequent catastrophe.

Clinton: The story of Bill and Monica, their forbidden love, and subsequent catastrophe.

Titanic: Jack is a starving artist.

Clinton: Bill is a bullshit artist.

Titanic: In one scene, Jack enjoys a good cigar.

Clinton: Ditto for Bill.

Titanic: During ordeal, Rose's dress gets ruined.

Clinton: Ditto for Monica.

Titanic: Jack teaches Rose to spit.

Clinton: Let's not go there.

Titanic: Rose gets to keep her jewelry.

Clinton: Monica's forced to return her gifts.

Titanic: Rose remembers Jack for the rest of her life.

Clinton: Clinton doesn't remember Jack.

Titanic: Rose goes down on a vessel full of seamen.

Clinton: Monica... oh, let's not go there, either.

Titanic: Jack surrenders to an icy death.

Clinton: Bill goes home to Hilary... basically the same thing.

MEASURING UP

Bubba and Ray (Tennessee mechanical engineers) were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up.

A woman walked by and asked what they were doing.
"We're supposed to find the height of the flagpole," said Bubba, "but we don't have a ladder."

The woman took a wrench from her purse, loosened a few bolts, and laid  the pole down.  Then she took a tape measure from her pocket, took a measurement, announced, "Eighteen feet, six inches," and walked away.

Ray shook his head and laughed.  "Ain't that just like a blonde!  We ask for the height and she gives us the length!"
