SWEET JOHN GONE!

THERES A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN!

We learned first hand at last weeks meeting that there has been a change in leadership.  No more quite, sweet, John.

Sammy taught us a thing or two, drawing on his background as a teacher.  Some members had to be taken to counseling immediately when he whipped out his mighty yard stick, bringing back memories of Sister Wratchet from 3rd grade.

Bechelli and others who continued to tempt fate by talking, risked being hit with an eraser – at $5 eraser, to be exact, as that was the fine of the day.

Sam the Man, shocked all those present by conducting a pop quiz at the conclusion of the meeting.  After each member completed the test, it was passed to another for grading.  It was suggested that those who failed the test should be required to attend detention and study hall after the meeting.

Clearly, Sam has education as one of his goals.  This reporter cant wait until midterms!

DEMOTION PARTY AT HIT!

POLICE RELEASE MAJORITY

OF CLUB BY SUNDAY

The demotion party, postponed because of the presidential junket to Chicago, went off without a hitch last Friday night.

Held at the majestic Azevedo Estate in Clayton, laughter was the theme of the evening.  The food, catered by La Tapatia in Concord, arrived on schedule in a Roach Coach, making burly construction guy and man of the hour John Newman feel right at home.  Carleen McCarl put her culinary skills to work and dressed up the bean dip.

The demotion team, who had been working on an appropriate send off for John for minutes and seconds, presented a heart warming rendition of Big Sweet John sung? to the tune of Jimmy Deans 1960s classic, Big John.

John was presented with a framed collage celebrating his trip up Shasta, with the inscription, When youve got an Ice Axe, who needs a gavel, Fred McCarl also presented

DEMOTION PARTY - CONTINUED

John with another framed collage of his familys visit from the Contra Costa Times Food Critic Kat Correa.

Then, in a stunning move, John presented his board members with individual gifts recognizing their contribution to the club over the past year.

Former member Sheri Moore and her husband Garry joined the 35 or so members in attendance.

Special thanks to Theresa and Matt Azevedo for opening their home for this event.  Hats off to past-past-prez Fred McCarl for putting together a great party.

WAKAYAMA EXCHANGE STUDENT

ARRIVES AUGUST 1ST

Mark your calendars now for our Wakayama Exchange Students arrival on August 1st.  Shes 20 years old and we need to firm up accommodations and activities for her during the time shes here.

Several members have expressed an interest in meeting her at the airport, which is always a lot of fun.  We also need to set up activities during her stay.

Theresa Azevedo has set up a calendar for the visit.  A link is available at www.CDRotary.org

CLUB COMMITTEES FILLING UP FAST

At the last meeting, the clubs committee sign up sheets were unveiled.  Theres a lot of work to do and everyone needs to help out in their multiple areas of interest.

If there are any holes in the committees, the board will fill them at the next board meeting.  (Remember, the board may think youre interested in other things that you are)

THIS WEEKS MEETING A GREAT ONE FOR GUESTS!

Today, Michael Mendona will be speaking to us about a prosthetic hand project he has been working on this past year.  His compelling story is a very real example of what one Rotarian can do to potentially change thousands of lives around the world.

You wont want to miss it!  This is also a great opportunity to bring a guest to show them the true power of Rotary!

CONCORD AREA ROTARY GOLF TOURNAMENT COMING UP JULY 22nd

Scott Singley reminds us that July 22 is the Concord Area Rotary Clubs Golf Tournament to raise money for First Tee.

Even if you cant play, you can help by sponsoring a hole or volunteering the day of the event.  Check with Scott to see where your help is needed.

MENTORS NEEDED!

Shani ONeal from the school district stopped by to ask for any assistance we can give to find mentors for young people in our community.  These are teens who need a positive role model in their life.  It doesnt need to take up a lot of time, so if youre interested, please call her at 925-688-6132.
