MAYOR CLIMBING THE WALLS!
Laura
Hoffmeister Seen Fleeing Children
This just in – Over the Memorial Day Holiday weekend,
our beloved mayor, Laura da Mayor Hoffmeister was seen clamoring up the great rock wall of Concord.
One can only feel sorry for the poor official who took time
out from her busy schedule of being da mayor of this fine city to enjoy a quite
day with the children of our future. No sooner was she on site, but her security detail was
distracted by a sale on corn dogs.
Always being the optimist, she wandered through the park,
probably shaking hands and kissing a lot of babies.
Always up to a new challenge, and seeing a prime opportunity
to impress a gaggle of future voters, she bravely stepped onto the face of the
menacing mammoth. Armed with only
her slippery tennis shoes – and no net – she fought to get to the
top. When she was almost 7/8ths
of the way up, the crowd gasp in horror as she lost her footing on the high
tech slippery plastic the rock is made out of.
Many were concerned that this slipperiness may have been the
work of her archrivals in the kingdom of Pittsburg or Pacheco. Alas, investigation proved that it was
just slippery plastic.
Not wanting to disappoint her fans, she made a valiant 2nd
attempt. This time succeeding to
the rounding applause of the many 5 and 7 year olds patiently waiting their
turn to climb the rock.
As she reached the summit, it was reported that she claimed
the mountain for annexation into the City of Concords sphere of
influence! She then rang the bell
molded into the top of the mountain not once, but twice!
Congratulations Laura!
LAST WEEKS MEETING RECAP
Scott introduced KEN CLARKE, owner of PC ².
Kathy promptly collared
him, and he agreed to donate to the Raucous Bacchus event. Welcome, Ken, and thanks for the
putting help!
MAUREEN KILMOUREY from the Concord Library was also a featured guest.
Rocky Barsotti acted as Protector of the Holy Grail in escorting
his wife, Patti, who just happens to be Kiwanis incoming District Governor for
the western part of the country.
Kaspers gave several bucks for having an incident-free boat
trip with the Moores (former
Rotarians). Beri admitted to going overboard with her constant
reminders about Rotary. Lets
follow up and get them back!
Rocky Barsotti got in the swing of things and donated a Kiwanis dollar.
We should keep that one framed!
Pat Kievning gave a dollar for celebrating the departure of her
oldest son.
Scott donated $5 (or more) for allowing a commercial and
then announcing that Fitzpatrick Chevrolet Hummer had just received its first
H3.
Dean Hart gave a buck for his (daughters) wedding
announcement.
JB gave his weekly donation for celebrating Aubreys
fifth movement. Keep up the
good work, Aubrey!
JK announced that Jackson
White had returned home on May
26. Well be looking forward to
updates as he continues his recovery.
Welcome back, Jackson! And thanks to John for all his efforts and to Taylor Family
Foundation for the plane ride!
JK also crowed a bit after
he tested the clubs new PA system.
Yes, we can now hear the speakers – even John, we think.
Dirk gave us the sad news that his grandmother had
passed on after a long bout with Alzheimers disease.
Beri told us about RIs international Peace scholarship,
a major award that needs applications in the next few days. These are scholarships to major
universities throughout the world, and UC Berkeley is just one. Let her know immediately if you know of
anyone about to enter grad school that might be interested.
Jeffie reminded us that Philip Arndt is the incoming Chamber Chairman of the Board. Sign up for the inauguration dinner on June
24th to show your support of Phil!
Scott had us pencil in July
22 as the Rotary Clubs Golf
Tournament to raise money for First
Tee. The money will be used to build a stand of some
sort. Scott will complete
that thought in the next few weeks.
Dirk reminded us about the July 4th
pancake/hot dog/pigs-in-a-blanket breakfast/lunch.
More info later, but set it aside on your calendars!
SOMETHING SNEAKY!
While we were all engaging
in our Rotary roasts, our crafty counselor Rick Sly Silvester tried to sneak out early. He admitted having forgotten some clients, but he didnt
tell us why he scheduled them for the Rotary meeting time
Patti Barsotti is the incoming District Governor of the
California-Nevada-Hawaii District for Kiwanis International. She is a member of their Berkeley
club, but spends a lot of time in Concord as well.
Patti
gave us the basic reminder presentation – reminding us why we are in
Rotary, what projects we are proud of, what attributes we would like to see in
members. This was a great
wake-up call, and we thank her for taking time from her busy schedule to help a
Rotary Club. Thanks to Dirk for
bringing her.
At the May
18th meeting, new membership teams -- effective immediately -- were announced
by the Czar of Golf & Membership, Scott Singley.
Our goal is
simple. Bring Rotary to one new person per team in the next year. The winning
team, and their new Rotarians will be treated to a delicious dinner, paid for
by the other members of the Club.
Here's the roundup of the teams -- get cracking!

ANOTHER DAY
OLDER Please take a moment to congratulate these birthday
Rotarians in June! Betty Larson (2nd) Scott Singley (12th)
DEMOTION PARTY DATE MAY CHANGE!
Due
to a number of scheduling conflicts and the large number of members attending
the convention, and the fact that we decided that Dean Hart might recognize
us if we tried to sneak into his daughters wedding reception to eat and save
money on food costs, the demotion
committee is considering changing the date for the Demotion Celebration to
July 9th.
Please
let Fred McCarl know your thoughts ASAP!!
CENTENNIAL
PROJECT UPDATE
Update from Mark Deven, Rotarian & Assistant City
Manager
Our project is progressing to its Completion. The poles
and shade structure was supposed to be completed last week.
Unfortunately, substandard poles were sent by the
manufacturer and the City's project manager, after conferring with me, forced
the company to send us new ones. The holes for the foundations have been dug
and the poles will be installed next Tuesday/Wednesday, June 7-8.
Modifications to the turf and irrigation system will be
completed on Monday June 6 and the frame for the patio area will be completed
on Thursday, June 9.
Instead of decomposed granite for the patio surface, we
will install yellow and blue pavers for the patio which will be more appealing and easier to
walk on for children in bare feet.
The color for the pavers will also match the shade sails. All of the construction
work will be completed on June 10.
The "sweat equity" contribution for this
project is to lay the pavers on Saturday, June 11.
My staff and I estimate that the job of laying the
pavers can be completed within two three-hour shifts of six people. That means
we will need 12 people to split two work shifts of 8-11 am and 11 am - 2pm on
Saturday, June 11.
