CD ROTARIANS RUSH TO CENTENNIAL AD
Members
sponsor ÒtabÓ in CC TIMES!
President John
reiterated the opportunity to sponsor a half-page ad in the planned Contra
Costa Rotary ClubÕs ÒtabÓ or insert in the Contra Costa Times!
Beri Kasper, Jeff Kasper, Joe Bechelli, John Newman,
Kathy Lafferty, Sam Vesser, Philip Arndt, Dirk Wentling and Matt Chan all raised their hands. This means that, if another member or two sign up (if not
the Club will pitch in the remainder, weÕll have an extra half-page of
editorial content highlighting our ClubÕs efforts. Today is the absolute deadline, so donÕt hem and haw over
the decision. ItÕs the best $100
you could have spent last week!
APRIL TREECE
HIGHLIGHTS OPPORTUNITIES IN SCHOOLS
Last weekÕs speaker,
April Treece, who is a member of the Mt. Diablo Unified School District
Board provided members in attendance with an update of the secondary school
environment today.
April also introduced us to PACE a grass-roots effort from
parents to raise money to fund music and libraries in the schools.
OPPORTUNITIES IN
SCHOOLS
Fred McCarl, Dean Hart, and Sam Vesser agreed to review applications for our $1,000
Olympic High School scholarship and pick the winner. Thanks for stepping up to the plate! The winner and advisor
Alice Bonner will be the ClubÕs program on June 8th.
For all the kids who survived the
1930Õs, 40Õs, 50Õs, 60Õs and 70Õs
á First, we survived being born to mothers
who smoked and/or drank while they Carried us
á They took aspirin, ate blue cheese
dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes
á Then after that trauma, our baby cribs
were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.
á We had no childproof lids on medicine
bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not
to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.
á As children, we would ride in cars with no
seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of
a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.
á We drank water from the garden hose and
NOT from a bottle.
á We shared one soft drink with four
friends, from one bottle and NO ONE
actually died from
this.
á We ate cupcakes, white bread and real
butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!
á We would leave home in the morning and
play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
á No one was able to reach us all day. And
we were O.K.
á We would spend hours building our go-carts
out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the
brakes.
á After running into the bushes a few times,
we learned to solve the problem.
á We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's,
X-boxes, no video games at all, no
99 channels on cable, no video tape
movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet
or Internet chat rooms.... WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
á We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones
and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
á We ate worms and mud pies made from
dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
á We were given BB guns for our 10th
birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told
it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.
á We rode bikes or walked to a friend's
house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to
them!
á Little League had tryouts and not everyone
made the team. Those who didnÕt had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!!
á The idea of a parent bailing us out if we
broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers,
problem solvers, and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have
been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we
learned HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL! And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!

THE TRUE
MEANING OF SERVICE! At
one time in my life, I thought I had a handle on the meaning of the word
-"SERVICE."
"The act of doing things for other people."
Then I heard these terms:
Civil Service
Postal Service
Customer Service
Telephone Service
Internal Revenue Service
City/County Public Service
And I became confused about the word "service." This is not what I thought
"service" meant.
Then I overheard 2 farmers talking, and one said he had hired a bull to
"service" a few of his cows.
BAM!! It hit me, now I understand what all those "service"
agencies are doing to us.
I hope you are now as enlightened as I am.
